Scrappy Star Quilt Block Tutorial

scrappy variable star quilt block

Star quilts are my favorite.  And I love adding scraps to quilts.  Anything that shows off how different fabrics and colors play together is a win.  That’s how this star block came to be.

This is a partially paper pieced version of a traditional variable star block.  It is also super-sized to finish at 18.5” square.  I am in no way claiming to have invented this block!  I struggled to piece it with precision in the traditional way, and chose instead to come up with a way to simplify the process for myself, and make it larger while I was working on it anyway.   And now I’m sharing it with you!

The first version of this quilt was made with chambray and scraps on a Kona snow background.  It was gifted to my niece way back in February of 2017.

The second scrappy star quilt was made with a mix of purples and low volume fabrics.  I used a lot of favorite fabrics in this one, and really enjoyed going through my scrap bins for the low volume fabrics.

This past year, this quilt went to help raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Our good friends have two children with cystic fibrosis and it’s a cause near and dear to our hearts.  I couldn’t think of a better place for this quilt.
